Protein coffee is what it sounds like: coffee with a protein source in it. One cup instead of a coffee and a shake.
That's the whole concept, and it's genuinely useful if you already drink coffee every morning and keep meaning to hit a protein target you keep missing. What's less useful is how the category gets sold, because "protein coffee" covers products that have almost nothing in common once you turn them around and read the back.
Protein coffee combines coffee with whey, milk protein, casein, collagen or a plant protein such as pea. Products range from roughly 10 g to 30 g of protein per serving, across instant sachets, tub-and-scoop powders and ready-to-drink bottles.
The protein number gets all the attention. It's also the least informative thing on the pack once you start comparing properly, because 10 g of one protein isn't 10 g of another.
How much protein is in protein coffee?
There's no standard. Here's how seven current products compare on the panel.
| Product | Protein | Calories | Total sugar | Added sugar | Serving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bevzilla Protein Coffee | 12 g | 90 | 3 g | 0 g | 25 g sachet |
| Javvy Caramel Protein Coffee | 10 g | 70 | <1 g | 0 g | 1 scoop, 18.3 g |
| Chike Iced Coffee | 20 g | 110 | 1 g | 0 g | 2 scoops, 31 g |
| Four Sigmatic Protein Coffee | 10 g | 60 | 1 g | <1 g | 1 scoop, 20.6 g |
| Bulletproof High Protein Iced Coffee | 12 g | 110 | 5 g | 5 g | 2 scoops, 28 g |
| Ritual Essential Protein | 20 g | 120 | 0 g | 0 g | Plant powder |
| Premier Protein Café Latte | 30 g | 160 | 1 g | 0 g | RTD, 11.5 fl oz |
From product labels and manufacturer information at time of writing; formulations change. Serving sizes differ substantially, so these are not like-for-like servings.
Some honest observations about our own row, since we're the ones publishing the table. Chike fits 20 g of protein into 110 calories, which is a better protein-to-calorie ratio than our 12 g in 90. Javvy carries less sugar than we do. Premier Protein delivers two and a half times our protein. Our 3 g of total sugar is lactose that arrives with the whey rather than anything added, but it's still the second-highest total sugar on this list.
Where a 25 g sachet earns its place is format and moderation: it's the lowest-calorie complete-whey option here, it's portioned rather than scooped, and it travels. Whether that beats 20 g in a tub depends entirely on what you want the drink to do.
The column most comparisons leave out
Protein quality varies by source. Whey and milk protein are complete proteins containing all nine essential amino acids; collagen is not, because it contains no tryptophan. Two products declaring 10 g of protein can be delivering meaningfully different things.
| Product | Protein source | Complete protein | Caffeine in mg on label | Panel type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bevzilla Protein Coffee | Whey | Yes | Yes — 80 mg | Nutrition Facts (food) |
| Javvy Caramel Protein Coffee | Whey protein concentrate | Yes | Not on panel | Nutrition Facts (food) |
| Chike Iced Coffee | Whey isolate + concentrate | Yes | Yes — 150 mg | Nutrition Facts (food) |
| Four Sigmatic Protein Coffee | "Protein Blend 11.03 g" — bovine collagen peptides + pea | Collagen is not | No — caffeine from green coffee beans, no figure | Supplement Facts |
| Bulletproof High Protein Iced Coffee | Whey isolate + concentrate | Yes | No — stated as "approximately 2x" a cup of coffee | Nutrition Facts (food) |
| Ritual Essential Protein | Organic pea | Brand states complete amino profile | N/A | Supplement Facts |
| Premier Protein Café Latte | Milk protein concentrate + calcium caseinate | Yes | Not on panel | Nutrition Facts (food) |
Three things in that table are worth pausing on.
The blend problem. Four Sigmatic's panel lists "Protein Blend 11.03 g" and "Coffee Blend 2.11 g" without breaking out how much of each component sits inside. You can read it end to end and still not know how much of the 10 g is collagen and how much is pea — which matters, because those two aren't nutritionally equivalent.
The caffeine problem. Two products here print a milligram figure. Chike declares 150 mg. Bulletproof instead tells you its coffee has roughly twice the caffeine of a regular 8 fl oz cup, which is a comparison rather than a number, and leaves you to work out what a regular cup contains. Four Sigmatic lists caffeine from green coffee beans with no quantity at all. If you're managing caffeine intake, three of these labels can't help you.
The panel problem. Some of these are regulated as dietary supplements rather than food. That's a different framework with a different box on the back, and it isn't a criticism — but it's a distinction most shoppers don't know exists, and it changes what the numbers are describing.
Whey, casein, collagen or plant?
Whey is a complete dairy protein absorbed relatively quickly. Casein is dairy and digests more slowly. Collagen is a dairy-free animal protein that lacks tryptophan, so it isn't complete on its own. Plant proteins such as pea suit people avoiding animal products, and are sometimes blended to complete the amino acid profile.
Most articles frame this as whey versus plant and stop there, which misses that popular products use neither in isolation. Premier Protein runs on milk protein concentrate with calcium caseinate. Four Sigmatic pairs bovine collagen with pea. Bulletproof and Chike both combine whey isolate with whey concentrate. Four genuinely different approaches under one category name.
None is universally better. Whey fits more complete protein into a smaller serving, which is why sports nutrition leans on it. Plant works if you avoid dairy. Collagen has real uses and a real tryptophan gap. Reading the source tells you more than picking a side.
Stated plainly: whey is a milk protein. Bevzilla Protein Coffee contains milk and is labelled accordingly. Javvy, Chike, Bulletproof and Premier Protein all declare milk too. If you're avoiding dairy, that narrows this list fast.
What about added sugar?
Worth checking separately from total sugar, because they answer different questions.
Total sugar counts everything, including lactose that comes along with dairy protein. Added sugar counts only what was put in. Our 3 g is the former — lactose from the whey, nothing added. Bulletproof's 5 g is the latter: brown sugar is the third ingredient on its list, so it's declared as 5 g total and 5 g added.
Neither is a scandal. But a brand quoting only whichever line flatters it is telling you less than the panel does, and both numbers are printed for a reason.
When people drink it
Three patterns, mostly.
As the morning coffee. The most common and least complicated. If coffee is already fixed in your morning, the protein arrives without a new habit attached to it.
Around training. Some people have it before or after a session. Worth being clear about what that is and isn't: protein coffee contributes to daily protein intake, and contains caffeine if the product has any. It's not a pre-workout formula and we won't describe it as one.
Instead of a café drink. A flavored latte's calories come mostly from milk, syrup and toppings. A protein coffee has a different profile — though "different" isn't automatically "better," and only the two panels settle it.
Is protein coffee good for you?
It depends on the product and how it fits your overall diet. Protein coffee is a convenient way to include protein in a routine that already involves coffee, not a health intervention.
More protein per serving isn't automatically better. Your total daily intake, the rest of your diet, your activity level and your own requirements matter far more than whether one cup holds 10 g or 30 g. Someone already hitting their target gains little from the bigger number. Someone consistently short might gain a lot.
Treat it as a food product that happens to be convenient. Not a meal replacement, not a substitute for a diet that works.
Bevzilla Protein Coffee
Each 25 g Bevzilla Protein Coffee sachet contains 12 g of complete whey protein, 90 calories, 3 g total sugar, 0 g added sugar and 80 mg of caffeine. Every one of those figures is on the pack, in the unit it's measured in, with no protein blend or coffee blend hiding the breakdown.
Available in Original, Vanilla Crème, Toasted Hazelnut and Mocha Melt. Artificially flavored, declared on the label. Contains milk.
We're not going to claim we win the tables above, because we don't. Chike fits more protein into fewer calories than we do. Javvy carries less sugar. Premier Protein delivers two and a half times the protein in a bottle you can drink cold.
What a sachet gives you is 12 g of complete protein at 90 calories in a portion you don't have to measure, and a label where every number you'd need to run that comparison is already printed. Some of the products above don't let you run it at all.
Frequently asked questions
Is protein coffee the same as a protein shake?
Not quite. A protein shake is built around protein with water or milk as the base; protein coffee is built around coffee with protein added. The line blurs with ready-to-drink products, several of which are effectively coffee-flavored protein shakes. The ingredient list settles it faster than the product name.
Does protein coffee contain caffeine?
Usually, but the amount varies widely and not every brand prints a figure. Chike declares 150 mg and Bevzilla declares 80 mg; Bulletproof describes its content as roughly twice a regular cup without giving a number, and several others list caffeine as an ingredient with no quantity attached. Look for milligrams rather than accepting "contains caffeine."
Which protein coffee has the most protein?
Of the products compared here, Premier Protein Café Latte has the most at 30 g per 11.5 fl oz bottle, followed by Chike Iced Coffee and Ritual Essential Protein at 20 g. Serving sizes and formats differ substantially, so the highest number isn't automatically the best fit.
Is collagen protein the same as whey protein?
No. Collagen contains no tryptophan, so it isn't a complete protein on its own, while whey and milk protein contain all nine essential amino acids. Two products declaring identical grams of protein can differ meaningfully depending on the source.
Which protein coffee has the least sugar?
Among those compared here, Ritual Essential Protein lists 0 g total sugar and Javvy lists under 1 g. Dairy-based products carry some naturally occurring lactose, so check total sugar and added sugar as separate lines rather than relying on either alone.
Can protein coffee replace a meal?
Generally no. It provides protein and some calories, but most formulas are low in fiber, fats and the rest of what makes a balanced meal. It's coffee with protein in it.
How much protein is in Bevzilla Protein Coffee?
12 g of complete whey protein per 25 g sachet, at 90 calories, with 3 g total sugar, 0 g added sugar and 80 mg of caffeine. It contains milk.
