Search "Lion's Mane dosage" and you'll get numbers. Lots of them, stated with impressive confidence, usually with no indication of where they came from.
Here's the problem with all of them: human studies of Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) have used wildly different daily amounts, and those amounts came from wildly different material. Dried fruiting-body powder in one study. Erinacine-enriched mycelium in another. A capsule that was 80% mycelium and 20% fruiting-body extract in a third. Comparing their milligram figures side by side is a bit like comparing the weight of a bag of coffee beans to the weight of a shot of espresso and concluding one is stronger.
Human trials have used Lion's Mane doses ranging from roughly 1,050 mg to 3,600 mg per day, over durations from seven days to 49 weeks. No single dose has been established as standard, because the studies used materially different preparations.
That's the short answer. The longer one is more useful, so below is every dose we could find in the human research, with the form, the population and the duration attached — because a milligram figure without those three things attached doesn't really mean anything.
One caveat before the table. These are amounts used in specific studies. They are not recommendations, and we're not presenting them as such.

What's actually behind those numbers
Tables flatten things. Here's what each study did, because the details are where the interesting parts live.
Mori et al. (2009) is the study everyone cites and almost nobody reads. Four 250 mg tablets, three times a day, sixteen weeks, in adults aged 50 to 80 who had been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. Note that last part. It's a clinical population, not a group of healthy thirty-year-olds trying to focus at work, and that distinction gets dropped constantly when the 3,000 mg figure gets quoted.
Nagano et al. (2010) took an unusual route and delivered the dose through food: four cookies daily, 500 mg of fruiting-body powder in each, for four weeks. Small study, short duration, narrow population.
Vigna et al. (2019) used three 1,200 mg capsules a day. But the material was 80% mycelium and 20% fruiting-body extract, so its 3,600 mg sits at the top of the range while representing something quite different from 3,600 mg of whole fruiting body would have.
Saitsu et al. (2019) deserves a small correction. Four supplements daily at 0.8 g each is 3,200 mg per day. You'll see this study cited at 2,400 mg in a surprising number of places, including some that ought to know better.
Li et al. (2020) ran for 49 weeks — by far the longest study here — using three 350 mg capsules a day of an erinacine A-enriched mycelium preparation, in adults with mild Alzheimer's disease. It also sits at the very bottom of the dose range at 1,050 mg. That combination is the single best argument against comparing these numbers directly: the material was enriched for a specific compound, so its milligram figure describes a fundamentally different thing than the 3,000 mg of dried powder two rows above it.
Xie et al. (2021) used 1 g of dried powder three times daily for a week. Worth knowing before anyone cites it for cognition: it wasn't a cognition study. The researchers were looking at serum biochemical markers and gut microbiota.
Docherty et al. (2023) looked at 1.8 g/day in 41 healthy adults aged 18 to 45, measuring both acute effects and effects after 28 days across cognitive performance, stress and mood. It's one of the few studies here in a young, healthy population.
Daoust et al. (2026) used 2 g/day of a fruiting body and mycelial biomass preparation for eight weeks, in 109 adults aged 40 to 75 with self-reported cognitive difficulty. It's the largest study on this list and also a preprint, so treat it more cautiously than the peer-reviewed entries.
Why milligrams alone tell you almost nothing
1,000 mg of one Lion's Mane preparation is not equivalent to 1,000 mg of another, because extraction method and raw material change what's actually in the finished ingredient.
Look at the forms in that table again. Dried fruiting-body powder. Fruiting-body extract. Mycelium. Mycelium-and-fruiting-body blends. Erinacine A-enriched mycelium. Five categories of material, all measured in the same unit, none of them interchangeable.
This runs in both directions, which is the part people miss. A lower milligram figure on a concentrated extract isn't automatically a weaker amount than a higher figure on whole mushroom powder. Li's 1,050 mg of enriched mycelium and Mori's 3,000 mg of dried powder aren't three times apart in any meaningful sense. They're just different.
Milligrams tell you how much material is in the serving. What's inside the material is a separate question, and the label has to answer it separately.
Fruiting body vs mycelium: why the form matters as much as the dose
The fruiting body is the mushroom itself; mycelium is the root-like network the fungus grows through its substrate. They have different compound profiles, and a study conducted on one does not describe the other.
There's a commercial wrinkle worth knowing. Mycelium is usually grown on a grain substrate, and depending on processing, some of that grain can carry through into the finished ingredient. Grain starch registers on a standard polysaccharide test, which means a high polysaccharide percentage doesn't always tell you what a buyer assumes it does. Beta-glucan figures are more informative than total polysaccharide figures for exactly this reason.
None of which makes mycelium-based ingredients illegitimate — several of the studies above used them, including the longest one. It makes the disclosure necessary. If a label just says "Lion's Mane extract" and stops there, you can't place it against the research, and that's true whichever form is in the jar.
So how much Lion's Mane should you take?
Human research has not established a single Lion's Mane dose appropriate for everyone, and anyone telling you otherwise is reading a study more loosely than they should.
What the research does show is a range: several of the longer studies clustered somewhere between 1.8 g and 3.6 g daily of powders and standard extracts, while enriched preparations were studied at considerably lower amounts. Durations ranged from a week to nearly a year. Populations ranged from healthy adults in their twenties to patients with Alzheimer's disease.
So "what's the right dose" is the wrong question. The version that gets you somewhere is: which preparation, at what amount, in whom, for how long, measuring what? Answer those four and a number starts to mean something. Skip them and it's just a figure on a box.
